Fuel hardlines are one of the most important components to any vehicle’s fluid transfer system. They are truly the lifeblood that serves the vehicle and are responsible for fluid movement in any direction.

Knowing their purpose can lead to a better understanding of the vehicle as a whole. Understanding this component, however, is just part of the equation.

RB Royal goes into what the purpose of this key component, how it’s made, and why working with the right manufacturer is critical.

Fuel Hardlines: What They Are and What Purpose They Serve

Fuel hardlines are the vessels that transport fuel from the tank to the engine. It’s important to note that fuel hardlines are a specific type of general fuel line.

Fuel hardlines are made with rigid materials, and will be used in areas of the system where there is minimal movement, as opposed to a softline or flexible fuel line.

The Production Process

Fuel hardlines follow four steps of production:

Material Selection

Fuel hardlines are meant to last. Stainless steel, aluminum, and coated steel are the best material options for fuel hardlines.

Stainless steel, while an excellent choice because of its naturally corrosion resistant properties, is difficult to cut and bend into shape. Aluminum might be easier to work with, but it won’t last as long compared to stainless steel. Coated steel is a strong middle ground both on corrosion resistance and workability.

Cutting and Bending

Once the material has been selected, the physical manufacturing process begins by cutting the tube to size. A key quality check during cutting is to ensure the open ends of the tube are smooth.

Once the tube has been cut, tube benders fit it to the exact shape it needs to be in under the hood.

Flaring

Fuel hardlines need flaring performed at each end of the tube so fittings can be secured.

Testing, Inspection, and Assembly

The end of the production process includes assembly by adding fittings to the ends of the tubes. From there, several quality control checks are performed to ensure there aren’t defects in the system such as cracks from bending, weak points, or leaks.

Why Working with the Right Manufacturer is Critical

Working with the right manufacturer for your fuel hardlines can make all the difference between a reliable system or a disaster.

How can you tell which manufacturing company is the right fit? Here are a few things to look for in your search.

Rich History

  • Proven results show a company has withstood the ups and downs that can impact manufacturing.

Custom Capabilities

  • While a stock option can sometimes serve your need, a company that has the ability to create custom fuel hardlines gives a customer more options and product versatility.

Proficient Quality Management Systems

  • Quality has to be at the forefront of everything a manufacturing company does. Look for key certifications such as an ISO 9001 certificate, which highlights a company’s commitment to quality management.

Reliable Customer Service

  • Reliable and friendly customer service goes a long way. Consistent communication throughout the production process leads to less questions and eases the minds of both manufacturers and customers.
